There are many reasons why you may need to get up on your roof: hanging Christmas lights, cleaning/repairing the gutters (A service we can provide for you!), clearing off branches from a storm, etc. While there are many reasons to go up on a roof, there are also many dangers. In 2014, there were 647 fatal falls, and 11% of work-related deaths for roofers were due to electrocutions. Before you go up on your roof, take the following precautions:
- Don’t work alone. Should an accident happen, you’ll want someone there with you.
- Keep your ladder on a solid, level surface. If you’re roof is uneven, add a roof leveler. If the ladder is in the grass, dig holes so it doesn’t slide. If you’re on a patio or deck, put a board behind the ladder. Always allow 3 rungs above the contact point.
- Avoid working on a wet roof. This will increase the chances of slips or falls.
- Use a safety harness. They can prevent falls and injuries. Click here to learn how to properly use a safety harness.
- Wear safety shoes/boots with good traction. This will also prevent slips and falls.
- Keep your work area clean from nails and roofing materials. This will reduce the chances of trips.
- Keep the weather in mind. If storms are coming, plan your roofing project for another day.
- Don’t get distracted. Looking off into the distance or seeing what’s going on below could cause you to trip/fall.
- If you’re afraid of heights, don’t go on the roof. From the ground, it may not look very high, but once you’re on the roof, the view is very different.
- Make sure you have a reliable ladder. Click here to find the best ladders to buy in 2018.
